The use of the Cisco IP default-gateway

Cisco layer two switches usually ws-c3750x-48t-s have a command for the IP default-gateway, literal translation is the default gateway.

Always know that knock this command in the two layer, but on the conceptand use is not very clear.

Actually it is very simple, this command is used for remote management, or vty, is usually after the configuration of the vlan1 interface address, theaddress in the configuration, to point to the three layer.

The following:

Conf t

Int VLAN 1

IP add 192.168.0.101 255.255.255.0

No sh

Exit

IP default-gateway 192.168.0.254

Above, 192.168.0.254 is the two layer three layer management address,usually three layer vlan1 address. 192.168.0.101 is the two layer switch management.

Configuration management address and IP default-gateway is the two layer switch as a host, the host always want to set a default gateway.

If only set up the management of valn1 address, but did not set the default gateway address, is unable to carry out remote management of the connection with vty.

Also note that, the two layer switch vlan1 address must be configured IPaddress of the default-gateway in the same segment. This is easy tounderstand.

Summary:

1, the two layer switch on the IP default-gateway address ismatched with the management of VLAN address, which is used for the vtyremote management, only this one. If you do not need to remote management, can not, will not affect the data communication (and any othercommunication among VLAN = are never mind)

2, if the configuration management of VLAN address, glc-lh-smd you must configure the IP address of the default-gateway. Otherwise it is impossible to remote management. Management of VLAN address and defaulut-gaeway address of the IP must be in the same segment.
